그리스인들은 산에는 오레아스, 숲에는 알세이스가 살고 있다는 식으로,
자연계에는 여러 정령(精靈)이 깃들어 있다고 믿어 이것들을 님프라고 하였다.
님프들이 저마다 차지하는 영역은 물의 경우, 오케아니데스는 대양(大洋),
네레이스는 지중해, 나이아스는 담수(淡水) 등으로 대별되는데,
한편 이름있는 강이나 우물은 대개가 고유의 님프를 가지고 있다.
님프들은 신화 속에서 일반적으로 아름답고 젊은 아가씨의 모습으로 표현되고,
춤과 음악을 즐기는 명랑한 성격의 소유자이다.
