네덜란드 태생 영국의 화가

역사적 전원풍경과 일상생활 장면을 그려 당대에 커다란 인기를 누렸다.

네덜란드에서 한 공증인의 아들로 태어났으며, 안트웨르펜 미술 아카데미에 들어가(1852~58)

역사화가 헨드리크 레이스 밑에서 미술공부를 했다.

1859년 스승을 도와 안트웨르펜 주의회 청사에 프레스코를 그렸다.

1863년 이탈리아 방문중에 그리스·로마 고대미술 및 이집트 고고미술에 흥미를 느낀 이후로는

거의 전적으로 그와 연관된 주제들을 그렸다.

영국으로 이주하여 1873년에 영국 국민으로 귀화했으며 1879년 왕립 아카데미 회원으로 선출되었다.

1899년에 기사작위를 받았다.
